A Message from MassBudget's Board of Directors
After an extensive national search, the Board is pleased to announce that MassBudget has found its next leader. Viviana M. Abreu-Hernández, PhD will be joining MassBudget as the organization’s new President. She will be stepping into the role beginning on August 1st.
Dr. Abreu-Hernández has a long history of serving populations that are often overlooked in policymaking. Her career has focused on critically examining the systems that reproduce racial and social inequities, while advocating for and implementing policies that improve professional, economic, and social opportunities for working families.
With experiences ranging from reforming the higher education system in Puerto Rico, to serving as Research Director for the 1199 SEIU League Training and Upgrading Fund, Dr. Abreu-Hernández brings a wealth of management experience as she joins the MassBudget team.
The Board is so thrilled to welcome Viviana as MassBudget’s President. Her demonstrated commitment to social justice and equity position her to be a strong leader for MassBudget during this critical time for the organization and the Commonwealth. We are excited to see how she can build on the great foundation set by MassBudget’s wonderful previous presidents, including Interim President Dr. Phineas Baxandall, whom we thank tremendously for carrying us through this transition.
The Board thanks Viviana for enthusiastically taking on this new leadership role as we embark on the organization’s next chapter putting forward antiracist policy solutions to address the Commonwealth’s most pressing issues.
With Trust in Our Collective Power,
– Dr. Alexandra Piñeros Shields
Chair, Board of Directors, MassBudget
Meet Viviana:
“Throughout my career, I have built strong, vibrant, committed, hardworking teams with deep solidarity and camaraderie. I look forward to working with MassBudget’s highly qualified staff as they continue to develop rigorous research and deliver crucial public policy advocacy.
To be able to address social injustices we need purposeful interventions and solutions to transform oppressive structures so we live in a more just society, in which we all have the same opportunities of access and outcomes.”
– Viviana M. Abreu-Hernández, PhD, MassBudget President
