Statement by Marie-Frances Rivera, President of MassBudget, on the FY 2023 House budget released on April 27, 2022

For Immediate Release: April 28, 2022

“Commendably, the House chose not to build its Fiscal Year (FY) 2023 budget around a package of tax cuts similar to those proposed by the Governor. Overall, the Governor’s tax package would have been costly and delivered benefits primarily to the state’s highest-income households. Instead of focusing on tax cuts for the rich, the House prioritized investments in Massachusetts’ people and communities. Their investment in our K-12 and higher education systems will aid our school communities and families and shows a strong commitment to addressing the growing equity gaps in our state.

“As the Senate Ways and Means Committee moves to the next step in the budget cycle, we hope they will continue on the path of investments that support our communities, such as providing more support for child care, for renters struggling to keep their homes, and resources for families struggling to make ends meet. Making strong investments to build off one-time federal relief is critical as we work to create a new normal in the Commonwealth.”
